The group of Sevilla is working in the regulation of Q biosynthesis and in the Q transport among membranes. These analyses have developed in several organism model such as the lower eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae, nematodes and human cells in culture. The participation of this group is required to perform the analysis of the involvement of already detected by RNAi silencing technology human genes in the Q biosynthesis functional by complementation in yeast and.

Then, is necessary the selection and cloning of genes involved in Q biosynthesis (Santos) to perform the functional complementation in yeast (Rodríguez). Positive genes involved in the Q synthesis will be cloned to obtain antibodies that allow us protein expression analysis (López and Arroyo). RNAi silencing of positive genes is a main objective in the project (Navas and Sánchez). Also, our group has participated in collaboration with other hospitals in the selection of patients with neuromuscular disorders, including ataxias (Bautista-Lorite).

The group of Sevilla is leaded by the Dr. Navas at the Department of Cell Biology in the Centro Andaluz de Biología del Desarrollo of the University Pablo de Olavide. In the last 10 years the main objective was analyze the biosynthesis and transport of Q among cell membranes. The Dr. Rodríguez is expertise in molecular biology and genetic of nematode C. elegans using RNAi silencing and functional complementation in yeast. The Dr. López has a large background in proteomic studies about proteins interacting with actin microfilaments. Dr. Arroyo, an expertise in cell subfraccionation and membrane purification procedures in mammalian cells. The Dr. Sánchez is specialist in mitochondrial physiology of human cells, mainly related with bioenergetics and apoptotic processes. The Dr. Santos is an expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in aspects related to Q biosynthesis and transport. Moreover those team members, three graduate students will participate in the project, and among them two are woman. Dr. Bautista-Lorite is an expertise in neurological disorders and is the head of the neuro-muscular unit in his hospital. He also coordinates the mitochondrial disease network program in south Spain.

The laboratory of SEVILLA group is equipped with the following services: confocal and fluorescent microscopy, MALDI-TOFF protein sequencing, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, real time PCR, image analysis system, 2D electrophoresis, advanced spectrophotometers, HPLC system with ECD and radioisotopic detectors, Clark electrode, fluorimeter, luminometer and basic equipment in nucleic acid and protein analysis.
